Our Christian Journey: How Do We Do Well?

Moving together from “we do not well” (2 Kings 7:9) to “well done” (Matthew 25:23).

Our Christian Journey: How Do We Do Well?

Driving a Bus in Kindergarten

Have you ever ridden in a school bus? There are actually some people that enjoy riding on buses and some that despise it. I’m guessing most of us are somewhere in between and see them as a necessary evil. How would you feel if a kindergartner was driving the bus you were on? Many years ago, my Dad was a teacher at a small school and would also drive buses for the football team when needed. I can remember a time when I was 5 years old when he let me drive… Okay, maybe I was just sitting in his lap, but my hands were on the wheel. It was exciting for me, yet I had no fear or anxiety because I knew my Dad was watching over and helping me. The whole time, he was really in control, he was just letting me be involved so I could feel a portion of his power and that I was needed.

Similar to how I was never really in control of the bus, I am never really in control of my life or family or world. My Father is sovereign – completely in control, independently from anything else. In Daniel 4:34-35 Nebuchadnezzar says, “…for his dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom endures from generation to generation; all the inhabitants of the earth are accounted as nothing, and he does according to his will among the host of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth; and none can stay his hand or say to him, “What have you done?” It can be scary to find out that you aren’t really in control and that there are no random coincidences (Isaiah 46:20). What matters is, what do you know about the one who is in control? Can God be trusted?

In Genesis, we learn that God created everything (Genesis 1) and nothing was made outside of Him (“For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.”
‭Colossians‬ ‭1:16-17‬). As the Creator, he has control over his creation including every cell in your body. That means He has a specific purpose for you and reasons for why you are the way you are. How scary would it be if He had‬‬ power over everything, but didn’t care about it or even was prejudiced against you? Thankfully God is holy (perfect and worthy of all praise and devotion – Revelation 4:8); and is also love (1 John 4:7-21). He loved us so much that He gave us Jesus to save us from our sin (which you should know by now and be sharing this Good News). He is also able to see the ‘big picture’ from beginning to end, so He knows better than we do (Isaiah 55:8-9).

The only way to truly know that God is worthy of being trusted with the control of your life is to get to know Him better. Through prayer, reading the Scriptures and acting on them, we can discover who God really is. Because I knew my Dad, I knew that I could trust him. He wouldn’t give me anything that I couldn’t handle with his help. So there was no need to fear while being “in control,” my daddy had me covered; I could enjoy being allowed to do his work for as long as he let me.
