Our Christian Journey: How Do We Do Well?

Moving together from “we do not well” (2 Kings 7:9) to “well done” (Matthew 25:23).

Our Christian Journey: How Do We Do Well?

But I’m Not A Christian

Whether you are a Christian or not, You are welcome here, no matter who you are or what you believe!! I have a secret to share with you – it’s not by accident you clicked here today.

WeDoNotWell.com is designed for, and directed at Christians that are wanting to grow in their daily walk with Jesus Christ. However, that doesn’t mean there’s nothing on this site for you. In this post, I will tell you a bit about what Christianity is, what it is not, and why I decided to go this road for the rest of this life and beyond.

Most importantly, Christianity is a relationship, not just another “religion.” There are a lot of people, especially in the celebrity world and throughout the USA in masses, that will claim to be Christians as a religion or identity, but have no relationship with Jesus Christ. You see, it all started long ago, before you and me, and the Earth, and even time itself. There was (and still is) an all-powerful, eternal, supreme being, that we simply call God, and He decided to make everything there is. “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” (Genesis 1:1). This beginning point is very important as it shows there was a beginning, a past, that we can look back on, follow it to the present and then know that if there is a past and present, there’s a future. But what happens in the future? How can we know if there’s life or anything else after death?

It’s not by luck or chance that you exist and most importantly, you are NOT a mistake. God made you and has a plan for your life. Because “God is love” (1 John 4:8), He not only made you, but wants to have a relationship with you. And when you die, He wants you to spend eternity with him. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16).

But there’s a BIG problem, God is perfect, and you and I are not. Think about it, when is the last time you went a single day without breaking God’s laws? That means no lying to your boss about why you weren’t at work, no changing the tags at the store so it comes up at a lower price, no hating your neighbor who is always too loud in the middle of the night. Face it, we all fail to keep God’s standard of perfection. “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,” (Romans 3:23). Because God is perfect and we have rejected him for our own selfish way, instead of a relationship, we have earned eternal punishment. “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 6:23).

Did you catch that “but” in the previous verse? God loves you so much that He created a way for you to avoid the punishment you earned and instead, spend eternity with Him. He sent Jesus, the embodiment of God, as a human, to be born of a virgin, grow up without once breaking God’s laws (even though constantly tempted as we are), and allow himself to be sacrificed, while guilt free, for our sins and transgressions. “God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.” (John 3:17). Through this act, Jesus paid the price required for everything you have ever done or will do that breaks the laws of God. However, Jesus didn’t stay in the grave. After three days, he rose again to show power over death, so we could be free. [Jesus] “who was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification.” (Romans 4:25).

That my friend is “Good News” – although we are lost in sin, God paid the price through Jesus, so that those that accept (believe in) him, will have eternal life. “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.” (Acts 16:31). For those that have accepted Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Savior, when you die, you will go to be with him forever. In the meantime, He sends the Holy Spirit to help you with daily living. If you die without accepting this gift that he died to pay for, you will be lost forever. Won’t you accept that gift today?

When I was a child, I was lucky (blessed) to be raised by parents who learned the truth of the Bible and tried to follow its teaching. In doing so, I was exposed to God’s Word (the Bible) on a regular basis. Though young, I was able to understand that I had done things that were wrong and not accidental. I learned that there would one day be a punishment for all the things I would do throughout my life that broke God’s rules. Thankfully, it didn’t stop there or there would have been nothing but despair and hopelessness. There was nothing I could do to pay the price required for my actions. “but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans‬ ‭5‬:‭8‬). Then I learned about Gods love and how Jesus paid the penalty for me. All I had to do was accept it. So, I asked God to forgive me and thanked him for what he did for me. It didn’t magically turn me into a perfect child from that point on, but I knew in my heart (soul) that something had changed for the better.

I’d love to say it’s been all rainbows and donuts from that point on, but that wouldn’t be honest. When I was a teenager, I stopped listening to God and started neglecting my relationship with Jesus. I turned to myself for the answers and direction and it only brought emptiness. I became depressed, reclusive and even suicidal because my focus was inward and all I could see was me and I didn’t like it. But God, had a pretty girl from my church ask if I wanted to be a camp counselor for the summer. I quickly said yes and started working for Child Evangelism Fellowship. It was while training to work with kids, that I remembered my relationship with God and knew I was not doing right. So, I asked God for forgiveness and recommitted my life to following him. Since then, there have been hills and valleys- times when I’m walking directing in God’s paths and times I tend to wander. However, I know that no matter how many times I let him down, he will never let me down or reject me. “All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.” (John‬ ‭6‬:‭37‬). He is always there, especially when I need him most.

Don’t you want that same assurance? In your own words, right where you are, acknowledge that you have sinned against God by breaking his rules. Believe that God loves you so much, that he had Jesus take your punishment, die and raise again. Thank him for forgiving you and ask him to help you do what’s right. Don’t wait until it’s too late to decide. I’m willing to talk to you more if you have questions. If you have asked God to forgive you, then you are now an adopted child of God and the Holy Spirit will help help guide you. I recommend you start reading the Bible (read John, Genesis and Psalms first) and find a local Christian church to visit and ask questions. Talk to God as much as you want because he’s always there to listen and help.

Christians, if you’ve read this far, do a quick check and see where your relationship with Christ is. Are you casually dating, happily married, estranged? We are meant to follow right by him every day as we learn to be more like him. What do you need to do to get back into that close relationship that you used to have?
