Whether by courier, carrier pigeon or email, delivering messages has played an important part in history. The Old Testament is full of people sending messengers with different pieces of news or seeking answers. The Bible itself is God’s message to mankind (1 Thessalonians 2:13; 2 Peter 1:21). Romans 10 tells us that it’s “good news” that we are to preach to everyone, so people can hear from God and believe. Will you be the one to take God’s message and declare it? Maybe you feel under-qualified or ill-equipped or are just to anxious around others. Those are normal feelings, but can be overcome. Let’s look at some of the messengers in the Bible and see if you can find a place to fit in.
Jesus Christ – might as well start at the top. Jesus is God the Son who was made flesh and dwelt among us (Titus 2:13; John 1:1-17). There can be no higher qualification. He brought this message – “And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Matthew 22:37-39. We may not be God the Son, but we do have the Holy Spirit living within us, helping us do what’s right and speaking on our behalf (John 14:16, 26).
Angels – Angels stand in the presence of God and were responsible for delivering some very important messages (“And the angel answered him, “I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God, and I was sent to speak to you and to bring you this good news.” Luke 1:19). Some were messages of joy and peace while others were of destruction. As children of God, we can boldly approach His throne while studying His very word and gain wisdom, joy and strength (Hebrews 4:16; John 1:12).
The Disciples – Walking with Jesus and learning from Him until He departed (temporarily), the disciples had insight and experience. “And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them inthe name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”” Matthew 28:18-20. They were commanded to go and make disciples. We also are to continue in their footsteps and unlike the disciples who had to figure it out as they went, we have the history of their experiences and instructions to learn from.
Moses – The life of Moses was full of ups and downs, glories and some disappointments. Yet God called him to be his messenger to Pharaoh and to the Hebrew people with amazing results (Exodus 3-Deuteronomy). However, Moses questioned his qualification (Exodus 3:11), his calling (Exodus 3:14), the people’s reaction (Exodus 4:1), his ability (Exodus 4:10) and even asks God to send someone else instead (Exodus 4:13). For each question/concern/stalling tactic, God had an answer and worked it out. God has the answers for our questions and doubts too (“And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.” Romans 8:28). He will provide everything you need to accomplish what he has set before you.
Lepers – The outcasts of society were used to deliver a message of God’s provision and faithfulness. In 2 Kings, they are the ones who discover that the enemy has fled in the night and left all their supplies in their haste. There is no more reason for the people to starve to death. It was good news that wasn’t believed at first as it was too good to be true. God’s free gift of salvation is also too good to be true for many and they will reject it. They will not believe you, which is why I’m glad it’s not up to me to convince the people. I just have to deliver the message, it’s the Holy Spirit that does the hard part (John 16).
A donkey – In Numbers 22, we see Balaam riding his donkey in opposition to God’s plan. God allows the donkey to see the angel of the Lord who naturally reacts with fear and respect. Balaam beats thin multiple times to get him to do his will before the donkey speaks to him. Balaam has a conversation with him and the Lord opens his eyes. What donkey are you riding and whipping to do your bidding? Will it have to talk before your eyes are opened to the leading of God?
Inanimate objects – Even the donkey was at least a living, breathing creature. In Psalm 19, we see, “The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork. Day to day pours out speech, and night to night reveals knowledge. There is no speech, nor are there words, whose voice is not heard.” Psalm 19:1-3. The whole world can see the skies and the works of God’s hands and they speak measures. Meanwhile, we have been given salvation and the Holy Spirit and the Word of God. How much more equipped do we need to be?
Did you see yourself in there anywhere? Maybe in multiple places? Do you feel inadequate or unqualified or useless? “His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence,” 2 Peter 1:3. “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them inthe name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” Matthew 28:19-20. “For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!”” Romans 10:13-15. Let’s get out there and deliver the message we are called to bring!
